Fredericton to Oromocto link completed – Celebrate the Grand Opening
Fredericton – A long awaited section of the Sentier NB Trail and Trans Canada Trail is finally reaching completion. A critical link of non-motorized trail in Lincoln, between the City of Fredericton and the Town of Oromocto is in its’ last stages of completion; and when completed it will allow for a continuous trail between the two communities, adding to an already impressive network of trails in the region. “This project has been a long time coming,” states executive director Poul Jorgensen of the New Brunswick Trails Council Inc., “we have been working with MRDC, the Province of New Brunswick and the Trans Canada Trail to get this trail finished and we would like to thank all of our partners for their contributions. We are also excited to be using recycled asphalt as a new method of surfacing and we hope this will reduce maintenance costs and improve surface conditions.”
Although this section is only 4.2km long, it was so rough that it was virtually impossible to cycle on, causing people to have to use a busy road. This portion of the trail sees quite a bit of use, and it is expected to increase with the opportunity of people living in Lincoln to commute to work in either Fredericton or Oromocto. There is also work taking place to complete a plan to help promote trails along the St. John River as a tourism product, with the trails in the Fredericton region playing a major role. Cycling and hiking is on the upswing and New Brunswick is positioning itself to be a prime destination.
A Grand Opening of the trail will take place on Wednesday, November 21st at 3pm at the Nevers Road access point in Lincoln. “We invite the public to come out and celebrate this great event,” states Mr. Jorgensen. “This trail is for the residents of the region to enjoy and provide them with an opportunity to be more active and healthy.” Dignitaries will be present to cut the ribbon and say a few words about the project.
The New Brunswick Trails Council Inc is a non-profit organization responsible for the maintenance of over 500km of Sentier NB Trail and dedicated to the advocacy and promotion of non-motorized trails in New Brunswick.
