About the role

The Environmental Program Coordinator – Trail Classification will support Trans Canada Trail’s Network Engagement and Support team by conducting fieldwork to verify trail conditions, engage with partners and collect data that informs national trail management systems. Reporting to the Manager, Network Development and Support, the student will serve as Trans Canada Trail’s local representative within Saskatchewan or Newfoundland, assisting with trail classification and information validation, signage implementation and partner outreach.

This role is ideal for a student passionate about outdoor recreation, geography, environmental studies or community development—someone who enjoys hands-on work and contributing to the enhancement of Canada’s national trail network. This position provides a valuable opportunity to contribute directly to the care and improvement of the Trans Canada Trail. The Environmental Program Coordinator – Trail Classification plays a key role in linking local field realities with Trans Canada Trail’s broader national systems, helping ensure the data, maps and trail experiences reflect what’s truly happening on the ground.


Key responsibilities

1. Field Assessment & Data Collection 

  • Conduct virtual and on-site visits to assigned trail sections to assess trail conditions, amenities and accessibility features
  • Verify and document signage placement, surface types, trail grades and infrastructure (e.g., gates, bridges, rest areas)
  • Record GPS coordinates, photos and observations for integration into Trans Canada Trail’s data management systems Identify and report on closures, reroutes, safety issues, or discrepancies between digital maps and on-the-ground reality

2. Partner & Community Engagement

  • Liaise with local trail partners, volunteers and municipalities to exchange trail information and gather updates
  • Provide support for local signage installations or trail improvement projects under the guidance of the Coordinator, Network Engagement and Support

3. Reporting & Coordination 

  • Submit weekly reports summarizing field observations, data collected and partner interactions
  • Work collaboratively with the Coordinator, Network Engagement and Support to ensure field data is accurately transferred into national databases
  • Support the development of photo libraries and other documentation for internal use and communications

Qualifications
  • Enrolled in or recently completed a post-secondary program in environmental studies, geography, recreation management, or related fields
  • Strong interest in trails, active transportation and outdoor recreation
  • Comfortable working outdoors in variable weather conditions and remote environments
  • Basic knowledge of GPS tools, mapping software or mobile data collection apps (training provided)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Technologically literate with strong software and database management skills and capabilities
  • Valid driver’s license
