Three Day Trip Ideas to Celebrate #OntarioTrailsWeek This Weekend
The Ontario Trails Act, passed in 2016, marked the provincial government’s commitment to building exciting, creative and healthy places to live, work and play. We are proud to announce that Trans Canada Trail Ontario was chosen as one of five Trails of Distinction as part of this new initiative.
If you’re still looking for ideas for outdoor adventure this weekend, here are three sections of Ontario TCT, some of them just a day-trip away:
Ontarians and visitors, if you’re looking for ideas to mark the occasion on the trails this weekend, here are three sections of Ontario TCT, some of them make for the perfect summer day-trip:
1. Waterfront Trail – 87 kilometres along the shore of Lake Ontario, from Burlington to Toronto. This trail welcomes walkers, hikers and cyclists on a route that meanders all the way past the CN Tower in the heart of Toronto
2. Chatham-Kent TCT – history, fiction and classic Canadian farm fields meet in southwestern Ontario. Canadian Reverend Josiah Henson was the inspiration for Harriet Beecher Stowe’s abolitionist novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, and the two-storey cabin that was his home is now called Uncle Tom’s Cabin Historic Site and forms part of this 222-kilometre Chatham-Kent section of the Trail.
3. Maukinak Trail – an iconic historical path that follows traditional Indigenous paddling routes. Archaeological surveys have uncovered over 200 pictogaph sites, dolmen stones and waymarkers, tooling sites and pottery shards along the route.
