Over a Decade of Trail Volunteerism in Newfoundland

Peter Troke has been part of the Discovery Trail Snowmobile Association (DTSA) for more than 10 years, during which he’s held several key roles, including Safety Coordinator, Vice President, and now President of the organization. Throughout all these roles, Peter has demonstrated a strong passion for trails and the outdoors in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Earlier this year, with funds from Trans Canada Trail, the Discovery Trail Snowmobile Association recognized Peter’s contributions to the organization and to trails in Newfoundland with a celebratory barbecue. Close to 30 people attended the event, which kicked off with a meal, followed by a presentation for Peter and some short speeches, with attendees marking their appreciation for Peter and his contribution to the DTSA.

“The group united to celebrate Peter’s remarkable accomplishments and his well-deserved recognition from Trans Canada Trail,” says Sandra Troke, DTSA member.  paved road on a bridge leading into forest

Leadership at all levels

“Peter is a highly committed and visionary leader with a passion for community development and outdoor recreation,” says Sandra. “For the past 10 years, Peter has been a cornerstone of the Discovery Trail Snowmobile Association, dedicating countless hours to the organization and its success – both on the ground and behind the scenes.”

Peter first got involved with the DTSA in 2014, initially as Safety Coordinator. In that role, he worked to implement effective safety protocols and raised awareness among. Later, as Vice President with the organization, he worked closely with the executive team on the organization’s strategic goals. And today, as President, Peter remains committed to sustainable growth and working with the broader community to raise awareness about the benefits of trails and nature. “Today, the trails managed by DTSA attract visitors and tourists from across the region and beyond,” Sandra says.

Maintaining and enhancing the Newfoundland T’Railway

Peter and his colleagues at the DTSA have been instrumental in several trail repair and enhancement projects with Trans Canada Trail over the past several years. From Trail Care projects in 2024 and 2025 to trail surface management and maintenance, they’ve led trail improvement projects, often working with other community groups to help raise awareness and engagement.

Chrissy Cusack, Trans Canada Trail’s Manager, Trail Quality, I’ve had the pleasure to work with Peter Troke on trail repair and enhancement projects, Trail Care events, and many more. Peter’ dedication to trails and community — and his work with the Discovery Trails Snowmobile Association — is truly inspiring. Congratulations, Peter, on this well-deserved recognition.

A focus on inclusivity and collaboration

Sandra cites Peter’s inclusive leadership style, rooted in teamwork, as a major factor in the DTSA’s supportive environment and the association’s success – and in the success of local tourism and community development initiatives in the region.

For Peter, the team and its mission are paramount in his work – and are a large part of what makes it so rewarding. “Dedicating my time to such a great group toward an incredible goal to create the best possible product for all to enjoy is incredibly fulfilling. I am surrounded by the best people, and I am proud to be part of such a great movement.”
