Recognizing Indigenous Languages Along the Trans Canada Trail

The Trans Canada Trail spans from the Pacific to the Atlantic to the Arctic, and is situated on the traditional territory of First Nation, Inuit and Métis Peoples. We acknowledge this traditional territory, and we equally recognize and honour the over 70 Indigenous languages that are spoken from coast to coast to coast. One way we do so is through our signage program, by giving trail groups the option to include Indigenous languages on their wayfinding signs, and by supporting the research and community engagement to do so. 

We’ve created a map that shows a rundown of our wayfinding signage projects featuring Indigenous languages, and also gives an overview of Indigenous languages and territories along the Trail. We will continue to add to the story map as more projects are completed.
