About the role
Position: Manager, People & Culture
Position Type: Full-time
Reports to: Chief Administrative Officer
Start Date: As soon as possible
Location: Remote from home in Canada
We’re looking for a Manager, People & Culture to build and lead Trans Canada Trail’s internal HR function. This is a rare opportunity to shape people practices from the ground up at a growing, mission-driven organization — designing how we develop managers, support employees, and build a healthy culture across a fully remote team. You’ll work closely with the Chief Administrative Officer and senior leadership, to own the full range of day-to-day HR practice: employee relations, performance management, policy, training, and culture.
This role suits someone who has built or meaningfully shaped an HR function and who is energized by the challenge of a growing, remote-first organization.
This position is open only to residents of Canada, who are eligible to work in Canada.
Key responsibilities
Employee Relations & Culture
- Serve as the trusted, day-to-day point of contact for employee relations matters across the organization
- Design and lead culture and engagement measurement (e.g. pulse surveys) to give leadership an honest, ongoing read on organizational health
- Partner with leadership on building healthy, sustainable norms for a fully remote team
Manager Capability Building
- Support and deliver practical advice for people managers, including giving feedback, managing expectations, delegation, developing junior staff, and handling difficult employee situations
- Coach managers directly through real employee relations situations
Performance & Policy
- Own the performance management cycle, including tools, timing, manager support and archiving
- Modernize and maintain HR policies, and lead the organization-wide communication needed to make sure they’re understood and applied consistently
HR Operations
- Lead recruitment and onboarding for a growing, distributed team
- Administer compensation and benefits programs
- Maintain HR systems and people data to support accurate, timely reporting
- Monitor employment compliance obligations across the provinces and territories where our team is located
Partnership
- Work alongside our external HR advisor on complex employee relations matters, leave and accommodation cases, and formal investigations, ensuring a clear and effective division of responsibility
Desired experience and qualifications
- 7–10 years of progressive HR experience, including demonstrated success at building, or significantly reshaping an HR function that has contributed to positive organizational culture change
- Demonstrated experience coaching managers directly through real situations
- Strong generalist foundation across employee relations, performance management, policy, recruitment, and HR administration
- Success implementing or improving HR process and procedure and an understanding of change management best practice
- Comfort and prior success working in a fully remote or highly distributed team environment
- Working knowledge of Canadian employment standards, ideally across multiple provinces
- Sound judgment and an ability to discern when to manage a matter directly and when to escalate or seek specialized support
- Experience in the nonprofit sector is an asset but not required; experience in a resource-conscious, fast-growing organization is equally valuable
- A collaborative, consulting-based approach to providing HR support and advice
Compensation package
We offer a compensation package that includes:
- Salary of $83,300-$95,000 annually, based on experience
- Contributions to group RRSP
- Insurance: health, dental, long-term disability and life insurance
- Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
- Flexible work location (within Canada) and hours of work
- Generous paid vacation, holidays and sick leave
Working environment
- Fully remote team with flexible working hours.
- A meaningful mission and the chance to shape how a growing national charity supports its people.
- The opportunity to build something from the ground up, with real organizational support behind it.
- Candidates must have a reliable internet connection and a dedicated workspace.
