Trans Canada Trail Statement on Alto High Speed Rail Project

Accessible, sustainable and well-connected transportation systems are essential to Canada’s future. This includes major investments in rail and transit, as well as the trail networks that connect communities, support active transportation and provide access to nature across the country.

As Canada considers major infrastructure investments, including the proposed Alto high-speed rail project, it is important that trail infrastructure is thoughtfully considered as part of the broader transportation landscape. Projects of this scale are complex, and early, meaningful engagement is essential to understanding how proposed corridors interact with existing public infrastructure and community assets.

Trans Canada Trail is actively participating in consultation related to the Alto project and is closely following the corridors currently under study. As the steward of Canada’s nationwide trail network, our role is to work constructively with project proponents, governments and partners to help maintain a strong, connected trail system as planning advances. It is our priority to ensure the continued connectivity and integrity of Canada’s nationwide trail network.

Public participation is a critical component of responsible infrastructure planning. Input from trail users, trail managers and community members can help decision-makers better understand how proposed routes intersect with existing networks and how projects may affect public access, mobility and community connections in the long term.

We encourage Canadians to participate in Alto’s online consultation process. Thoughtful, informed engagement will help ensure that future transportation investments reflect the needs and experiences of the people who use them.
