Paddling the Lake Superior Water Trail with Naturally Superior Adventures
Lake Superior’s rugged shoreline is home to nearly 1,000 kilometres of the Trans Canada Trail on water. Paddlers can explore the area by water, offering a unique perspective on an awe-inspiring landscape.
To help bring this experience to life, Trans Canada Trail has partnered with Wawa, Ontario-based Naturally Superior Adventures, who bring over 30 years of experience leading paddling expeditions on these challenging waters. Participants can embark on guided explorations of some of the water trail’s most scenic and accessible sections. Travelling in a replica 36-foot (11-metre) Voyageur canoe, hikers and new or less experienced paddlers can enjoy the Lake Superior Water Trail safely, while making a meaningful connection to Lake Superior’s remarkable natural and cultural history.

After a successful run in 2025, Naturally Superior has upped their offering to two tours by Voyageur Canoe in 2026. The Voyageur Canoe is well-suited to new and novice paddlers. It is quite stable and measures 36 feet long (11 metres) and 5 feet wide (1.5 metres). Teams stay together on board.
For each of these trips, 15 percent of trip fees is donated to Trans Canada Trail, supporting the organization’s ongoing development and stewardship of the world’s longest network of recreational trails.
“Trans Canada Trail and Naturally Superior Adventures share a passion for connecting people to nature while protecting Canada’s incredible natural environment,” says Matt Ainsley, Trans Canada Trail’s Director of Corporate Partnerships. “Participants can discover the beauty of the Great Lakes on an unforgettable paddling journey, while at the same time supporting a great cause.”

Experiencing the Lake Superior Water Trail by Voyageur Canoe with musician Gordon James
Naturally Superior Adventures’ first trip, a six-day journey through Lake Superior Provincial Park hosted by Kevin Callan, has already sold out, a testament to the growing excitement around these experiences.
A second trip with iconic Canadian folk musician James Gordon is available for booking. Participants will set out on an all-inclusive, beginner-friendly 5-day Denison Falls section, with trip dates from July 19-24, 2026.
James Gordon, a founding member of the legendary folk group Tamarack, has spent over 40 years capturing the heart of the Canadian landscape in song. While his classic “Frobisher Bay” has been covered by artists worldwide, Naturally Superior is partial to his ode to Michipicoten and the Lake Superior shore.

“This trip offers the opportunity to discover the unrivalled scenery and solitude of the world’s most expansive freshwater horizon on the Trans Canada’s Lake Superior Water Trail,” says David Wells with Naturally Superior Adventures. “James is bringing his banjo, and you’re welcome to bring your musical instrument or to sit back and enjoy the harmony of Lake Superior, live campfire music, wonderful paddling companions and fresh meals served by wilderness chefs.”
