Message from the Chair, Valerie Pringle

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote: ” Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”

I’ve come to believe passionately that building Trail is one of the greatest gifts we can give this country. Trails build communities as much as the other way around. They also encourage physical activity, appreciation for the outdoors, stimulate tourism and promote economic development.

The great Trails of this world matter enormously and the Trans Canada Trail will be the Mother of all Trails!

We are only 80 kilometres from completion of the Trans Canada Trail through Quebec. That will be a “last spike” to celebrate! We challenge all the other provinces to match the achievement (except PEI where the Confederation Trail is 100% completed).

On top of that is the fact that 80% of Canadians now live within 30 minutes of operational Trans Canada Trail. Think about that (it’s quite amazing) and then find it and enjoy it.

Our 72 Pavilions around the country are filled with hundreds of thousands of names of Canadians of all ages and backgrounds who have made a contribution to this magnificent national legacy project. We’d love to see your name inscribed for contributing towards a “metaphorical metre” (or a hundred) to the Trans Canada Trail.

My dream is:

- to see the Olympic Torch run on the Trans Canada Trail on its way to Vancouver in 2010;

- to see National Trail Day on June 1st become a focus for activity and celebration on the Trans Canada Trail in communities across the country;

- to raise the money necessary to make these dreams come true.

Thank you for being part of it.

  • I am a Canadian and an Australian and live in Australia….I am about to go to Canada for a visit…..I am just amazed at this project of which I know nothing until now…..so being a journalist and an avid hiker, I will try to do some stories on the trail
    Only Canadians would be so intreprid, fresh and on the edge driven to do such a thing! Wonderful stuff.
