Greening Ajax: A Community Effort to Transform a Roadside
In the heart of Ajax, Ontario, not far from Toronto, a stretch of roadside has been given a new lease on life, thanks to a community-driven tree-planting initiative. In 2023, the City of Ajax identified a space in need of naturalization and, with support from Trans Canada Trail’s Planting for Tomorrow program and non-profit group Yours Truly, set out to turn it into a thriving green space.

On September 23, 2023, community members, town staff and the non-profit group Yours Truly joined forces for a tree-planting day that saw 200 trees take root. With about 40 volunteers lending a hand, a mix of white spruce, aspen, serviceberry and cedar trees were planted, each chosen for their ability to thrive in the local environment.
The event was about more than just planting trees — it was a chance for people of all ages to get their hands in the soil, learn about conservation, and contribute to a healthier, more resilient ecosystem. To ensure their long-term success, the newly planted trees continue to receive regular care from town staff, including watering and mulching.

A year-plus on, the site is thriving. “The planting area appears to be in very good condition with a large number of species thriving in their new environment,” said Craig Blencowe, Supervisor of Forestry & Horticulture at the Town of Ajax.
Wild grasses have sprung up quickly, sometimes towering over the smaller saplings, but over time, the trees are expected to catch up and outgrow them. As with any planting, there were lessons learned along the way. Moving forward, they plan to incorporate larger plants in similar environments while keeping smaller saplings in the mix so that younger volunteers can still join in the planting process.

Enhancing the outdoor experience

While not directly on the Trail, this project has brought a welcome touch of greenery to the community. The newly planted trees not only beautify the area but also help support biodiversity, improve air quality and create a more pleasant space for passersby. These efforts contribute to a healthier environment and a better outdoor experience for everyone walking along the Salem Road & Achilles Road intersection in Ajax.
“Every time we drive past that intersection, we’re reminded of how this project brought the community together for something meaningful. It’s more than just trees — it’s something that transcends time. We might not be here forever, but the trees and the spirit of community will live on,” said a representative from Yours Truly.
