Trail Care Event:
Pine Lake Trail
A community gathering and outing along the Trail
In celebration of International Trails Day and Trail Care Day, members from the non-profit Pedal Junction, members of the community, along with Village of Haines Junction staff, gathered to host a fun, self-timed race along the Village of Haines Junction-Pine Lake Trail.
Participants were encouraged to show up in costume, and prizes were awarded in several categories. This family-friendly event included running, walking, biking and e-biking along the 6-kilometre Trail section, which concluded at beautiful Pine Lake.
Prior to Trail Care Day, a free bike-repair clinic was set up in town. Volunteers from Pedal Junction pitched in to repair community members’ bikes, to encourage cycling and spread the word about the race.
Celebratory barbecue with a breathtaking backdrop
Following the morning race, community members were invited to attend a celebratory barbecue at Pine Lake. Shuttle buses were offered from the village to the lake and back, to encourage car-free attendance at the celebration.
Thank you to generous sponsors Columbia Sportswear and Toyota Canada
Thanks to our generous Trail Care sponsors, Columbia Sportswear and Toyota Canada, the community in and around Haines Junction enjoyed a friendly, low-key gathering. “Our goal was to engage our community in an amazing morning walking, running and biking a six–kilometre section of the Trans Canada Trail from Haines Junction to Pine Lake. After the event we enjoyed a BBQ with fresh salads at the Pine Lake campground. In our small community of about 650 people, approximately 125 people participated in the event!” says Kari Johnston from PEDAL Junction.
VOLUNTEER/ORGANIZER SPOTLIGHT
Pedal Junction co-organized the Haines Junction Trail Care Day event alongside the Village of Haines Junction staff, and the event went off beautifully. Thank you to 10 key volunteers who coordinated the Haines Junction Trail Care Day event: Kari Johnston, Lianna Grice, Brendan Petrasek, Laura Goreki, Sarah Chisholm, Collin Kallio, Karin Voogd, Mike Gemmill, Mike Maloney and Arthur Galloit.
The Trail Care event in Haines Junction is a great example of how dedicated volunteers across Canada come together to enhance trails for their community – tens of thousands of volunteers pitch in annually to maintain and improve their local trails, and we are so grateful for their dedication.
