Trans Canada Trail is seeking an inaugural Director, Government Affairs to lead its advocacy and government relations efforts across all levels of government, with a particular emphasis on the federal level. The Trans Canada Trail is the longest multi-use trail system in the world and it is always growing. It reaches every province and territory, and connects all three of Canada’s coastlines. Each section of the Trans Canada Trail is managed locally and supports different activities and community needs.
Trans Canada Trail is the organization that advocates for, stewards and champions Canada’s nationwide trail system. A registered charity, Trans Canada Trail stewards a national trail in collaboration with local trail partners. With funding from the Government of Canada through Parks Canada, and investments from all levels of government and generous donors, Trans Canada Trail is the largest investor in trail infrastructure projects in Canada, supporting improvements, growth, and enhancements for generations to come.
Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Government Affairs plays a critical role in advocating for policies and funding that support Trans Canada Trail’s mission and programs while ensuring ongoing funding for the Trail. You will work collaboratively with internal teams and external partners to develop and execute advocacy campaigns by leveraging resources to achieve desired outcomes. You are adept at engaging all levels of government and have experience working with both elected officials and bureaucrats. Additionally, you will be responsible for managing the relationship with Trans Canada Trail’s external advocacy and government relations consultants.
As the ideal candidate, you have a strong understanding of how government operates, legislative processes, and experience in advocacy and government relations. You are strategic in how you build advocacy campaigns and are comfortable working independently and as part of a team. The successful candidate will be goal-oriented and flourish in a fast-paced and evolving environment where multiple competing priorities and deadlines are the norm. You will not be subject to the five-year lobbying restriction under the Lobbying Act, and are ideally, fluent in English and French.
