Trail-inspired treats that make great holiday gifts

Cranberry-almond overnight oats in a mason jar
Overnight oats make an excellent hiking breakfast and take only a few minutes to prepare. Give the dry mix as a gift (ahem, stocking stuffer) — or keep it for yourself! It makes a great winter-in-the-outdoors breakfast.
Ingredients
• 2/3 cup (75 g) rolled oats
• 1 tablespoon (15 g) sliced almonds
• 1 tablespoon (10 g) dried cranberries
• 1 tablespoon (14 g) chia seeds
• 1 tablespoon (7 g) flax seeds
• 1 tablespoon (11 g) brown sugar
• 1 teaspoon (2.5 g) ground cinnamon
Yield: 1 serving
How to prepare
1. Layer dry ingredients in a mason jar.
2. The night before eating it, just add one cup of milk of your choice.
3. Refrigerate overnight.
4. When ready to eat, top it with fresh fruit or yogurt, or enjoy as is.
Spiced hot chocolate mix
Prepare the dry mix, package it nicely in a jar, and you’ve got a lovely gift for a winter hiker! Your gift recipient can add the milk of their choice to prepare the hot chocolate, pop it into a thermos and head outside and onto the Trans Canada Trail, warm drink in hand.
Ingredients
• 1 cup (170 g) powdered sugar
• 3/4 cup (100 g) cocoa powder
• 1 teaspoon (2.5 g) ground cinnamon
• 1/4 teaspoon (0.6 g) chili powder
• 1/4 teaspoon (0.6 g) ground nutmeg
• 1/4 teaspoon (0.6 g) ground cloves
• 1/4 teaspoon (0.6 g) ground cardamom
Yield: Two 250 mL or four 125 mL mason jars’ worth of hot chocolate mix.
How to prepare
1. Mix all ingredients in a bowl and divide equally among mason jars.
2. To prepare, add 1 tablespoon (13 g) hot chocolate mix to 1 cup (250 mL) of the milk of your choice, warm up and stir until it dissolves.
3. Enjoy!
