A Tribute to Molly Demma
It is with heavy hearts that we share that Molly Demma, a dedicated and skilled steward of the Wolastoq | St. John River, passed away on October 11, 2023.
For over 20 years Molly held the role of Executive Director of The St. John River Society, focusing on creating opportunities to develop projects with regional and national impacts for this historic waterway, a section of the Trans Canada Trail.
The saying she was known for gives you a sense of the depth of her commitment: “the river, the river, always the river.” She was a champion of the Wolastoq | St. John River in every sense of the word.
In addition to her professional position, Molly was an active volunteer and supporter of many projects, initiatives and events in her community of Fredericton, New Brunswick.
In late 2022, Molly graciously agreed to our request to learn more about the work she was doing in her community to act, educate and combat the effects of weather-related damage on the Wolastoq | St. John River. The joy and passion she felt for her work was clear and we are grateful for the tremendous impact she had on this waterway section of the Trans Canada Trail. You can read that article here.
Among the many accomplishments achieved throughout Molly’s time with The St. John River Society is that, in 2013, the 400-km portion of the Wolastoq that runs through New Brunswick was designated a Canadian Heritage River by Parks Canada for its outstanding cultural heritage values.
Our sincere condolences go out to Molly’s family members, friends and colleagues. Her presence is missed but she will always be remembered.
