New Banff trail announced
Trans Canada Trail’s president and CEO Deborah Apps was in Banff for the announcement of the creation of the new Banff Legacy Trail on May 19.
The Honourable Jim Prentice, Canada’s Environmental Minister, announced the new 26-km recreational trail from Canmore to the Bow River Parkway will be part of the Trans Canada Trail. The federal government will contribute $6.75 million to the paved pathway which will be suitable for activities such as walking, bicycling and in-line skating, and will provide residents as well as Canadian and foreign visitors with a unique opportunity to experience the area’s world-famous Rocky Mountains.
Deborah Apps thanked the Minister and the many partners involved in the project which has been under discussion for many years. She applauded the work of Alberta TrailNet Society, Trans Canada Trail’s provincial partner. “We are proud that this spectacular trail section will be part of the Trans Canada Trail. It is an important addition to our cross-Canada Trail as it winds from coast to coat to coast, showcasing the diverse landscape, rich history and natural beauty of the country.”
The Banff Legacy Trail will be completed by 2010 in time to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the creation of Banff National Park – the birthplace of Canada’s national park system.
