The Perfect Energy-Booster: Bliss Balls!

When you’re heading out on the Trail, snacks are key. If you’ve got tasty energy-filled snacks: even better! We spoke with Danielle Felip, Trans Canada Trail’s Manager, Philanthropy, who, in addition to her passion for all things philanthropy, is also a hiking enthusiast-slash-foodie. Danielle shared her favourite bliss balls recipe for all to enjoy

Orange goji cacao bliss balls

These bliss balls are relatively simple to prepare and are compact and pack a protein- and antioxidant punch that make for an ideal snack for your Trans Canada Trail adventuring, rain or shine.

Ingredients

• 10 Medjool dates, pitted and halved

• 1/4 cup (25 g) goji berries (or dried cranberries), plus extra for garnish

• 1 cup (130 g) hazelnuts

• 1/2 cup (75 g) almonds

• 1 tablespoon (15 mL) maple syrup

• 1 tablespoon (7 g) raw cacao powder

• Pinch of sea salt

• Zest of one orange (1 tablespoon; 6 g)

How to prepare

  2. In a food processor, pulse the hazelnuts and almonds until finely chopped, but slightly chunky.
  3. Drain the dates and goji berries, then add them to the nuts in the food processor along with the maple syrup, cacao powder, sea salt and orange zest.
  4. Process until well combined.
  5. Roll the mixture into balls and push a goji berry into the top of each one.
  6. Enjoy!

Store the bliss balls in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
