The Perfect Energy-Booster: Bliss Balls!

When you’re heading out on the Trail, snacks are key. If you’ve got tasty energy-filled snacks: even better! We spoke with Danielle Felip, Trans Canada Trail’s Manager, Philanthropy, who, in addition to her passion for all things philanthropy, is also a hiking enthusiast-slash-foodie. Danielle shared her favourite bliss balls recipe for all to enjoy.
Orange goji cacao bliss balls
These bliss balls are relatively simple to prepare and are compact and pack a protein- and antioxidant punch that make for an ideal snack for your Trans Canada Trail adventuring, rain or shine.
Ingredients
• 10 Medjool dates, pitted and halved
• 1/4 cup (25 g) goji berries (or dried cranberries), plus extra for garnish
• 1 cup (130 g) hazelnuts
• 1/2 cup (75 g) almonds
• 1 tablespoon (15 mL) maple syrup
• 1 tablespoon (7 g) raw cacao powder
• Pinch of sea salt
• Zest of one orange (1 tablespoon; 6 g)
How to prepare
- Soak the dates and goji berries in a small bowl of warm water for 10 minutes.
- In a food processor, pulse the hazelnuts and almonds until finely chopped, but slightly chunky.
- Drain the dates and goji berries, then add them to the nuts in the food processor along with the maple syrup, cacao powder, sea salt and orange zest.
- Process until well combined.
- Roll the mixture into balls and push a goji berry into the top of each one.
- Enjoy!
Store the bliss balls in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
