The Pear-fect Post-Trail-Adventure Reward: Pear Dessert
Some would say (and this author would agree) that pears are a perfect fall fruit. They’re nutritious – they contain antioxidants, fibre, potassium, and vitamins C, K and B6. They are known to reduce inflammation and help to maintain digestive health … and did we mention they’re delicious?
We’re here with a wonderful fall dessert, ideal as a treat after adventuring on the Trans Canada Trail —or a tasty snack to bring along on your next outing!
Pear-chocolate crumble
This fruit-heavy dessert fares best with no more than a 3:1 fruit-to-chocolate ratio. It’s relatively simple to prepare and can be served with vanilla ice cream for some extra decadence or enjoyed on its own.
Ingredients
Filling
• 6–8 firm pears, peeled, cored and diced
• Juice of half a lemon
• Dash of salt
• 3 ounces (100 g) dark chocolate (around 70 per cent), chopped
Topping
• 1 1/4 cup (150 g) all-purpose flour
• 2/3 cup (60 g) rolled oats
• 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar
• 2/3 cup (150 g) unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
• 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 g) baking power
• 1/4 teaspoon (1.25 g) ground cinnamon (optional)
How to prepare
- Grease an 8 x 8-inch (20 x 20 cm) baking dish.
- Combine the chopped pears in a large mixing bowl with the lemon juice, the chocolate and a dash of salt.
- Mix well and place in bottom of baking dish.
- In a separate bowl, mix together flour, oats, sugar, baking powder and cinnamon (if using). Add the butter and use your hands to combine with the dry ingredients until the texture becomes crumbly.
- Spread topping evenly on fruit mixture.
- Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 25-30 minutes, or until bubbling.
- Enjoy!
