Background
The Trail Infrastructure and Major Repairs Stream was designed to develop and implement planning and construction projects along the Trans Canada Trail that will increase and improve the quality and value of the network, as well as improve the safety and comfort of users. Further, this stream will work to ensure both the sustainability and integrity of the network and work to minimize the Trail being closed or rerouted at any given time.
Eligibility
- All applications must meet the general eligibility requirements outlined in Section 2 of the Trail Funding Program’s Framework.
- Applications submitted must identify that they will meet all applicable codes, bylaws and regulations pertinent to the project and region
- Applicants must provide valid proof of liability insurance, as it pertains to the section of the Trail where the project is taking place
- Applicants must fill up the eligibility questionnaire at the beginning of the application form, and provide any additional information required.
Financial support
Planning and design phases
Trans Canada Trail may provide financial support for consultations, design, planning or studies (engineering, environmental impact assessments, etc.).
All studies that receive a contribution from Trans Canada Trail must be a precursor to a construction project; however, an approved contribution for design, planning or studies does not guarantee financial support from Trans Canada Trail for the construction phase of the project.
Construction phases
Trans Canada Trail may provide financial support for the construction phase of a project, including major repairs. See list of example projects below.
The maximum contribution amounts for planning, design and construction phases are limited to:
- Total project costs between $10,000 and $25,000 may be funded up to $7,500
- Total project costs between $25,001 and $75,000 may be funded up to $15,000
- Total project costs between $75,001 and $150,000 may be funded up to $30,000
- Total project costs over $150,000 may be funded up to $60,000
- There is a maximum contribution of $120,000 per project (if approved, payments over 2 years)

- New trail and improvements to existing trail
- Drainage
- Structural integrity of the Trail
- Resurfacing
- Cycling route improvements
- Roadway crossings
- Safety improvements
- Trail and access point design, consultation and planning for:
- Water access points
- Land-based access points
- Infrastructure design, consultation and planning for:
- Bridges
- Boardwalks
- Street improvements
- Motorized use mitigation
- Safety improvements
Construction
- Construction of new Trail sections
- Creation of Trail access points
- Projects aimed at building or expanding paths and trails – greenway
- Projects that move towards four season connectivity/operation of the Trail
- Improvements to drainage and the structural integrity of the Trail, as well as resurfacing
- Widening of a Trail section to accommodate increased number of users
- Construction of a new bridge or rehabilitation of a bridge and its approaches
- Added viewpoints or points of interest
- Implementation of measures to regulate access to greenway sections
- Creation of a reserved bike lane or addition of cycling infrastructure that increases cycling safety
- Construction of a uniform trail surface
- Connection of the Trail to public transportation facilities, urban centres, schools and industrial zones to enable the safe development of active transportation
- Reconfiguration of an intersection to facilitate crossing for trail users
- Implementation of trail designs that limit the speed of users
Major repairs
- Repairing damage to the Trail caused by:
- Natural disasters or weather events
- Increased usage
- Animal activity
- General maintenance of the Trail including:
- Trail surface work
- Brush cutting
- Projects in aid of achieving four-season connectivity of the Trail
- Installing trail usage counters
- Mapping, trail audits and GIS work
- Small scale trail improvements to adapt to new active transportation technologies
