They’re back and we couldn’t be more excited!

On Tuesday, January 23, 2024, father and son duo Scott and Trevor Haldane will once again hold an online photography presentation and fundraiser – their third one! – in support of Trans Canada Trail. Plan to join in the fun from 7:30 to 9pm Eastern. Admission is by donation.

Wild Places, Wild Faces: The Elements will showcase wildlife, landscapes and stories from across Canada. This is the third edition of their photography event and the theme this year is the elements: Earth, Water, Ice and Air.

By showcasing their beautiful photos over the last several years in support of Trans Canada Trail, Scott and Trevor have raised thousands of dollars. They have inspired nature lovers across the country to make a donation and we are thankful for their support. These funds are vital, helping to keep the Trans Canada Trail open and accessible for all.

Scott and Trevor have first-hand experience in knowing that we all benefit from being outdoors – clearing our minds of everyday distractions, moving our bodies while surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature, and discovering new things about the land beneath our feet. The Trans Canada Trail is a place that benefits our physical and mental health as we connect with others while discovering Canada’s incredible landscapes.

“As a nature-loving family living across the country from one another, we feel a strong connection with Trans Canada Trail’s mission to connect the country, celebrate nature and embrace the outdoors.”

The Inspiration

A few years ago, Scott and Trevor Haldane discovered a shared passion for amateur wildlife photography and want to inspire others to get outside and enjoy the beauty of the Canadian wilderness. In this unique online presentation, the father-son duo – who live on opposite sides of the country – will share photos they’ve captured that highlight the elements: Earth, Water, Ice and Air. The images celebrate the incredible diversity of wildlife they’ve been lucky enough to spot while spending time in nature, including on the Trans Canada Trail.

Although Scott and Trevor live thousands of kilometres apart, in Ontario and BC respectively, the father and son both love to spend time outside, exploring their incredible natural surroundings. It’s there that they indulge their love for nature photography – often along the Trans Canada Trail – and they’ve formed a stronger bond in the process.

The Fundraiser

Scott and Trevor want to give back and are hosting this fundraiser for Trans Canada Trail. Nature photography is one of several great reasons for Canadians to get out on the Trail, as they can benefit from time spent in the great outdoors and meet people along the way. With your support, we can keep the Trail accessible to all users, year-round.

About the Presenters

Trevor Haldane

Trevor learned to love the outdoors from an early age, through canoe trips with his grandad and summers at camp.

In the last few years, Trevor started photographing wildlife in the parks and ravines of Toronto. This part-time hobby blossomed into a full-time passion during the COVID-19 pandemic. He found the quiet, active lifestyle, and focus of wildlife photography to be a great boost to his mental health during these stressful times.

In 2020, Trevor moved from Toronto, Ontario, to Fernie, British Columbia. He was thrilled to enter a new landscape, home to a vast array of wildlife. He has since kept himself busy photographing bees, bears and everything in between.

Scott Haldane

Scott’s dad, Gib, was an avid birdwatcher and canoe camper who had an astounding knowledge of the natural world. Gib’s influence made a lasting impression on his eldest son.

Scott’s interest in photography began with backpacking trips across Europe in the mid-1970s and has continued through more than four decades. As the former CEO of YMCA Canada and the Rideau Hall Foundation, as well as a travel enthusiast, Scott has travelled around the world and has made a point to explore new places and photograph his experiences to learn more about diverse communities and cultures.

When the pandemic hit Canada in March 2020 and travel plans were put on hold, Scott refocused his camera on the incredible variety of wildlife in and around the forests, ponds and rivers of the Ottawa/Gatineau region. As his son, Trevor, discovered the same passion, father and son built on their close relationship through a shared passion for nature and the trails that give them access to the wild world.

“As a nature-loving family living across the country from one another, we feel a strong connection with Trans Canada Trail’s mission to connect the country, celebrate nature and embrace the outdoors.”
